The Williams Airway Intubator is a device designed to assist in tracheal intubation. It is available in two adult sizes, 9 cm and 10 cm, each recommended for use with specific endotracheal tube sizes. The 10 cm size is recommended for use with up to an 8.5 ID endotracheal tube, while the 9 cm size is recommended for up to a 7.5 ID endotracheal tube.
This airway is cylindrical on the proximal half and open on the distal half of the lingual surface. It serves as an oral pharyngeal airway, a means of intubating the trachea, and a guide for fiberoptic laryngoscope placement. The Williams Airway Intubator is disposable and is intended for single use.
Studies comparing the Williams Airway Intubator with other intubating airways, such as the Berman Intubating Airway and the Ovassapian Fibreoptic Intubating Airway, have shown that the Williams Airway Intubator provides a better view of the glottis and a shorter time needed to complete bronchoscopy. In a study of 60 patients, the Williams Airway Intubator provided an unobstructed path for bronchoscopy in 48 out of 60 cases, compared to 12 cases with the Berman Intubating Airway
